KEYNOTE / CONFÉRENCE

Do we still speak for the trees? Usability’s changing role in a UX-owned world.

Vendredi 21 juin  l  9h15 - 10h15  l  Amphi Gaston Berger  anglais + traduction fr

In the book The Lorax by children’s author Dr. Seuss, the hero attempts to protect a forest endangered by corporate greed. His most famous line is “I am the Lorax, I speak for the trees.” Steve Krug has always liked to think of usability professionals as being like the Lorax, except that we speak for the users, as advocates—sometimes the only advocates, or at least the most passionate–for their best interests.

In his keynote, Steve will finally address some questions he’s been pondering for years now:

    • Thanks to the rise of UX (of which usability is now just one of many parts), we’re more likely to get a seat at the design and development table now. But does that actually mean we have more impact ?
    • Are we still the same user advocates we used to be? Or have forces—both blatant and subtle–been gradually reshaping our work and our mission…perhaps without us even noticing (like the frog in the pot of water gradually brought to a boil) ?
    • How do business interests affect what research we do, for what purposes, and how the results get used ?
    • And finally, are we in danger of losing our way? And what can be done about it (without losing your job) ?
